Description
The Clare Acadian Festival, the oldest Acadian festival in the world has always been a celebration of Acadian heritage and culture. The organization of the Festival requires numerous hours or dedicated work by volunteers who plan multiple varied activities to suit all interests and all ages. The Festival seeks to attract outside tourists as well as the local population and Acadians who come back home each year for their summer vacations.
Since the 2004 World Acadian Congress, the Festival’s organizing committee has attracted a numerous team of powerful players all dedicated to enrich the quality and diversity of its activities. This year still features many of the traditional activities that are a mainstay such as the Gabriel and Evangeline contest, masses, a parade, lumberjack competitions and the irreplaceable bazaar that every year gathers the large majority of the Clare population on the University campus after the parade.
Huge outdoor concerts will mark all three week-ends featuring Acadian, Cajun and Bluegrass music, all of which have had a profound influence on local musical creations. Clare professional groups will be playing as well as some of the best Acadian groups from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Louisiana.
Other concerts or gatherings held elsewhere in the community will promote storytelling, film, music, dance and theatre. An open house day invites people to tour all the local artist’s galleries of the Clare region to see the talented artists at work. The hugely successful quilt exhibit will still be featured as well as ocean and land excursions that promote ecotourism and Clare’s unique natural landscapes. The full two weeks will end on August 15th with a noisy Tintamarre, a concert with Grand Dérangement and BeauPhare and an electrifying fireworks display.
The Clare Acadian Festival has become an attractive mixture of modern and traditional activities, however it’s most notable appeal is no doubt the warm welcome of the Acadian people who live here. Come join our family!
